In 1464 Niederwald procured a letter of indulgence from the bishop. The aim was to obtain the necessary funds to decorate the newly built chapel and to purchase the inventory. The construction of the present church began in 1666. The consecration of the church by Bishop Adrian IV of Riedmatten took place in 1678.
