Woyzeck, based on the eponymous dramatic fragment by Georg Büchner, is a musical theatre piece written and performed by UMS'nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen), directed by Wolfgang Beuschel. Büchner's original text, shortened and condensed for the stage, serves as the basis for UMS'nJIP's work. Woyzeck, a simple soldier, works as a barber for a captain. His wages are not enough to feed his beloved Marie and their child, so he sells himself as a medical guinea pig. The consequences of the experiments weaken this man, already scarred by life, to such an extent that he becomes increasingly lost in a world of delusions. And so, despite his sincere efforts to be a good man, Woyzeck ends up sinking into a society that offers him no guidance in life. Woyzeck becomes a victim of obscure patriarchal patterns.
With over 300 commissioned works, 1,500 concerts in 40 countries and 35 international awards, UMS'nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) is one of the world's most renowned and active contemporary music ensembles.
