Anyone coming to the MEbU in Münster’s Goms district on September 13 should bring one thing above all else: time. Plenty of time. Not because you’ll have to sit still in a concert seat for eight hours, but because the intention is exactly the opposite. UMS’nJIP invite you to a 10-hour experience where music, literature, landscape, and human connection flow into one another. The event begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 11:00 p.m. The focus is on the complete musical setting of Rolf Hermann’s poetry collection *In der Nahaufnahme verwildern wir* (In Close-Up, We Run Wild). The Valais-based new music duo UMS’nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) has set all the poems in the collection to music. The result is a work lasting a good six hours, divided into four 90-minute concert segments. In between, there’s time to walk, reflect, talk, eat, and drink—and that is precisely the essence of the day. With this, UMS'nJIP consistently continue their series of unconventional formats. Instead of short program segments and fleeting impressions, the duo invites you to a day that deliberately defies the rhythm of acceleration.

When UMS'nJIP attended the book launch for Rolf Hermann’s *In der Nahaufnahme wir verwildern* at Leuk Castle in late 2021, there was no way to foresee what a wondrous turn of events this would take: the setting of an entire poetry collection to music. Its linguistic rhythm, musicality, formal language, concept, and content electrified UMS'nJIP. The four song cycles came into being almost as if in a trance. And with that, another dream took shape: What if, over the course of an entire day, the concert audience were to experience, hear, read, and share this collection of poems in its entirety? What if these four cycles were performed one after another in a single day?
Reading poetry is usually a sporadic affair. A poem here, one there: wandering through the pages, flipping back and forth—the experience typically lasts only a few minutes. Here, we are dealing with a fundamentally different experience. Performances of musical and/or theatrical works lasting several hours hold a great fascination. They are like a multi-day hike: unforgettable. It is not only the uniqueness and the physical and temporal dimensions of the experience that linger long afterward; it amounts to a spiritual experience. Sharing time together and immersing oneself for an entire day in subtly and delicately crafted language, sound, and music—that is what this program offers.
Rolf Hermann. Born in 1973 in Leuk, Canton of Valais, he lives as a freelance writer in Biel/Bienne. He writes prose, poetry, radio plays, spoken-word pieces, and theater scripts. He earned the funds to study English and German literature in Fribourg and Iowa, USA, by working as a shepherd in the Simplon region. His work has received various awards, most recently the City of Biel Culture Prize (2017) and the Canton of Bern Literature Prize for the short story collection *Flüchtiges Zuhause* (2019). UMS’nJIP is among the most active ensembles for contemporary new music, with performances at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Colón in Buenos Aires, the Shanghai New Music Week, the Liceu in Barcelona, and the Venice Biennale. In 2022, they will settle in Goms and, together with MEbU (Münster Earport) , establish an art space for contemporary music not far from the Rhone Glacier.
