Culture, customs and activities on every corner
Reckingen is the oldest mountain village in the Goms. The oldest finds come from graves from the Hallstatt period (500 BC) and are supplemented by Celtic and Roman finds. Reckingen was first mentioned as Requinguen in 1225. It was founded as an independent municipality around 1266 and has been merged with Gluringen since 2004. However, the mountain village has been shaped above all by art. The church (1743-45) is the most important baroque sacred building in Upper Valais. Entire dynasties of sculptors, bell founders and organ builders have brought their great art from Reckingen to Switzerland and the surrounding countries. In many churches, masters of organ playing still swear by the works of the Reckingen organ builders. This is demonstrated by lovingly renovated buildings such as the sawmill, mill, bell foundry, bakehouse and washhouse, which can be visited.
