A varied circular route through the Goms winter landscape shaped by floodplain forests. The outward and return paths lie on both sides of the young Rhone.

The circular route Zeit - Bodmen starts from Biel (VS) and runs through the beautiful Goms winter landscape along the right bank of the Rhone towards Blitzingen. The floodplain forests along the Rotten, as the young Rhone is called in Goms, are of great importance and offer a diverse habitat for birds, insects, and amphibians.

The turning point of the route is at Blitzingen, where the river course is also crossed. The idyllic hamlet of Bodmen lies somewhat away from the village center and has a eventful history. Until 1848, it functioned as an independent community and had its own forests, commons, and alpine pastures. The settlement, considered one of the most impressive settlement images of Goms, is also one of the best preserved.

The return path leads over snowy meadows past the two hamlets Zeit and Sechshäuser (Sägschhiischere), which were still inhabited in the 15th century. When these two settlements on the left bank of the Rotten opposite the village of Selkingen were abandoned is not known.

Safety guidelines

Use of the winter hiking trails is at your own risk. Obergoms Tourismus AG rejects any liability and assumes no responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of the information on this website.

Carry a hiking map with you or download the complete description of the hiking trail with a large scale map. Use only signposted paths and observe all markings and signs—for your own safety, for the protection of the landscape, and out of respect for wildlife. Behave considerately towards other path users. Take your rubbish and that of others with you.

Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. In unstable weather, it is better to turn back early.

Carry additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, especially in winter, even under cloudy skies.

Plan your route carefully and thoroughly. Inform yourself in advance about the current conditions (avalanche danger, cross-country ski trails, winter hiking trails, snowshoe trails, and road conditions) and weather conditions. The winter sports report provides valuable information from the region in this regard.
