The birthplace of Caesar Ritz
Historians describe Niederwald as one of the most unspoilt and characterful places in the Goms valley. The mountain village owes its origins to the old Rottenbrücke bridge, which was first mentioned in 1250. This is where the old mule tracks coming from Ernen changed sides of the valley. Hotel magnate Cäsar Ritz was born here in 1850. His monument, grave, and birthplace can still be visited today. In addition to hospitality, art was also at home under the roofs of Niederwald thanks to the painter Lorenz Justin Ritz (1796-1870). After extensive renovation, the station building in Niederwald became Station Ritz. The new facilities include a bistro, a shop selling regional products, a permanent exhibition on Cäsar Ritz, and a temporary exhibition featuring pictures by the illustrator, painter, and sculptor Willi Dreesen.
