A musical interpretation of a literary adaptation of Rilke's poems
one is after entwendete fenster, im störgarten and neophyten, the fourth and last section from Rolf Hermann's poetry collection In der Nahaufnahme verwildern wir (2021), which UMS'nJIP set to music: A long poem full of cinematic associations, a somnambulistic walk through Biel, the current center of Rolf Hermann's life and probably the most personal part of the poetry collection. It is also a homage to Biel as a place of inspiration - in analogy to Rilke, who dedicated his Quatrains Valaisans to the landscape that gave his late work the necessary creative space. With this long poem, UMS'nJIP conclude the setting of Rolf Hermann's complete volume of poetry. They have used various working methods here: composing side by side, symbiotically, improvisationally; in this decidedly internalized text they feel their way to a radio play-like form. They begin in the late fall of 2025, the first snow is already blocking motorized traffic on the road to the Nufenen Pass, right at the snow line in the harsh pre-winter silence, they read the poem to each other...
UMS'nJIP and the art song UMS'nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) have performed over 300 commissioned works and 1500 concerts in over 40 countries since 2007, performing individual works over 100 times - which is almost unique in the world of new music. Parallel to their work as performers, they are also active as composers and have received 35 international awards for their works. In their work, they repeatedly question classical genres - in this case the art song. The inherent sophistication of the art song on a compositional and textual level is a particular challenge. The duo's personal affinity and arrangement (voice, recorders and electronics) offer an appealing terrain for a very special approach to a genre that has been able to achieve a symbiosis of text and music like hardly any other.
UMS'nJIP is one of the most active ensembles for contemporary new music, with performances at the Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City, Colón Buenos Aires, Shanghai New Music Week, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Steghi Athens, Alexandrinsky St. Petersburg, CRR Istanbul, Biennale Musica Venezia and Binn. In 2022, they settled in Goms and founded the MEbU (Münster Earport), an art space for contemporary music not far from the Rhone Glacier.
