PROGRAM
UMS'nJIP
flksngs_electrified
Valais folk songs in new arrangements
for voice, recorders and electronics, 2026, UA
flksngs_electrified is a program with folk songs from the various valleys of the German-speaking Upper Valais and the neighbouring Walser valleys in arrangements by UMS'nJIP. All of them are wrapped in electronic ambiences. In addition, asymmetrical bars, surprising harmonic twists, ascetic but also earthy arrangements alternate in dense succession and give the songs unexpected facets with one of the most ancient German-language dialects - far removed from homeland bliss. Imaginatively and subtly, they process their musical roots and build a humorous, yet thoughtful and time-critical bridge to our crazy times. Intercultural competence begins with a differentiated knowledge of one's own culture. An important key to understanding musical identities is to present them with contemporary means and make them accessible. JIP, who also conducts the Upper Valais Folk Song Choir, worked for the Valais UNESCO Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage from 2009-2018, where he presented the first overview of the sources for folk songs in Upper Valais in 2015. UMS'nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) are one of the most active contemporary new music ensembles with over 300 commissions and 1500 concerts in 40 countries and 35 international awards, with performances everywhere from the Liceu Barcelona, Steghi Athens, Alexandrinsky St. Petersburg, CRR Istanbul, Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City, Colón Buenos Aires, Shanghai New Music Week, Venice Biennale and Binn/VS. In 2022, they settled in Goms and founded the MEbU (Münster Earport), an art space for contemporary music not far from the Rhone Glacier.
