PROGRAM NOTES
In Deutsche Lyrik, UMS'nJIP group together settings of German poems and thus not only provide an insight into various contemporary compositional techniques to capture German poetry musically, but also into a no less colorful round dance of poems by world-class German-language poets: Walser, Mörike, Heine, Eichendorff, Goethe and Fontane. While Mehmet Ali Uzunselvi's Walser settings - the fifth commissioned work for UMS'nJIP - hint at a Schoenbergian Pierrot style, Christophe Schiess' Wiegenlieder (the third commissioned work for UMS'nJIP) are internalized miniatures full of poetry. In contrast, the three cycles by Mayer-Spohn and Hagen are each subordinate to an abstract conceptual idea, i.e. the groups of poems as a whole go through a single musical process.
UMS'nJIP and the art song. Parallel to their work as performers, UMS'nJIP are also active as composers and have received 35 international awards for their works. In their work, they repeatedly question classical genres - in this case the art song. The inherent sophistication of the art song on a compositional and lyrical level is a particular challenge. The duo's personal affinity and arrangement (voice, recorders and electronics) offer an appealing terrain for a very special approach to a genre that has been able to achieve a symbiosis of text and music like hardly any other.
UMS'nJIP (Ulrike Mayer-Spohn and Javier Hagen) are one of the most active contemporary new music ensembles with over 300 commissions and 1500 concerts in 40 countries, as well as 35 international awards, with performances everywhere from the Liceu Barcelona, Steghi Athens, Alexandrinsky St. Petersburg, CRR Istanbul, Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City, Colón Buenos Aires, Shanghai New Music Week, Venice Biennale and Binn/VS. In 2022, they settled in Goms and founded the MEbU (Münster Earport), an art space for contemporary music not far from the Rhone Glacier.
