Goms, 23.01.2026 - From Friday to Sunday (23 - 25.01.2026), the international cross-country skiing elite will be guests at the Goms Nordic Center. During these three World Cup days, a total of around 240 athletes will compete in six competitions. Guaranteed snow, challenging courses, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a fantastic audience make for unforgettable competitions. Today's kick-off has already been a complete success: around 2,000 spectators were able to experience thrilling competitions at the highest level in beautiful weather.
After a two-year hiatus, Goms is back on the international cross-country skiing stage and is one of the venues for this year's Coop FIS Cross-Country World Cup. However, the snow-sure Valais high valley is not just a stronghold for professional cross-country skiing and biathlon, but also has a lot to offer amateur cross-country skiers.
The team sprint kicked off the World Cup weekend in Goms on Friday. In this attractive format, the 15 best teams qualify for the final round. After qualifying, the Swiss had justified hopes of a podium place. Team "Switzerland I" with Janik Riebli and Valerio Grond won the qualification. In the final, they were able to stay in the lead until halfway through the race. In the final laps, however, they ran out of steam. The varied course with two uphill sections demanded everything from the cross-country skiers. In the end, the Swiss team finished in 6th place. The Norwegians around Harald Oestberg Amundsen and Einar Hedegart extended their lead in the last of the six laps and won confidently ahead of "Italy I" with Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino and the US team Ben Ogden/Gus Schumacher.
It was a similar picture for the Swiss women. After 13th place in qualifying, Nadja Kaelin and Alina Meier were in contention for a podium place for a long time. Around 2,000 spectators, including school classes from the Münster day school, cheered the athletes on loudly. In the end, the Swiss women had to let the front runners go and also finished in 6th place.
In the women's event, the strong German team of Laura Gimmler and Coletta Rydzek came out on top. Second place went to "Norway I" with Astrid Oeyre Slind and Julie Bjervig Drivenes. The podium was completed by the second Norwegian team of Karoline Groetting and Tiril Udnes Weng.
The organizing committee was satisfied with the start of the World Cup weekend. The weather was better than expected and is expected to be fine on Saturday and Sunday too.
