The Ritzingerfeld Chapel
Ritzingen is part of the old county. However, you will primarily recognise it for its large chapel, which stands alone in the middle of lush meadows and is probably the most popular photo subject in Goms: the pilgrimage chapel "Unsere liebe Frau auf dem Ritzingerfeld" (Our Lady on the Ritzinger Field). The first traces of the building date back to around 1450. The chapel took on its current form between 1600 and 1650. In the past, every village was home to craftsmen who laboriously handcrafted shingles for the typical Valais wooden roofs from large blocks of larch wood. Today, this craft is practised almost exclusively in an old workshop in Ritzingen. It is well worth taking a look over the craftsmen's shoulders.
