Course content
"Rejoicing to the skies and saddened to death". Do you know the wonderfully melancholy klezmer music from Eastern Europe? The fiery "Bulgar" or the heart-rending "Nigun"? This course offers an introduction to Yiddish music, its special playing styles, the various common rhythms, the basic principles of impromptu accompaniment, the history of this music and a repertoire of pieces. We learn most of the pieces from sheet music, sometimes more, sometimes less notated, but we may also learn a piece without sheet music, as is the tradition of this music. The sheet music will be adapted for the registered instruments.Course leader
