After a two-year hiatus, Goms is back on the international cross-country skiing stage and is one of the venues for this year's Coop FIS Cross-Country World Cup. However, the snow-sure Valais high valley is not just a stronghold for professional cross-country skiing and biathlon, but also has a lot to offer amateur cross-country skiers.
After qualifying in the morning, three Swiss skiers each made it through to the classic final. In the women's event, Anja Weber, Lea Fischer and Nadine Fähndrich made it into the top 30, with Lea Fischer having to bow out in the quarter-finals. Anja Weber qualified for the semi-finals as the lucky loser. However, she was unable to confirm her performance here and finished the race in 10th place. Just like two years ago, hopes in Goms were pinned on Nadine Fähndrich. The 30-year-old once again impressively demonstrated that she is in Olympic form. Supported by vociferous Swiss fans, she was able to leave Sweden's Maja Dahlqvist behind her on the home straight to take third place. For Fähndrich, this is the 26th podium finish of her career, the third this winter. After her success, she praised the great support on the side of the piste. The fans had carried her to the podium. Fähndrich was only beaten by Sweden's Linn Svahn and Laura Gimmler from Germany. Goms is one of Svahn's favorite courses. But also one of the most challenging in the World Cup, she emphasized in the winner's interview.
The Swiss men's team had to cope with a setback even before qualifying. Valerio Grond withdrew after the team sprint on Friday due to illness. This meant that hopes were pinned on Janik Riebli. However, after the exhausting sprint the day before, the Obwalden native was unable to keep up with the best. He was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Just like Noe and Isai Näff, who had no chance in their heats. Numerous young Swiss riders were given the opportunity to show themselves at their home race in Goms.
As expected, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo came out on top in the men's race. The Norwegian sprint dominator pulled away from everyone on the second climb and won by a large margin ahead of the American Gus Schumacher and Edvin Anger from Sweden. With a top field of participants and beautiful weather, the second day of competition in Goms attracted well over 3,500 spectators. The 20 km mass start is scheduled for Sunday at 11.15 am.
Winter hiking
The high plateau has around 70 km of signposted winter hiking trails, divided into different lengths and levels of difficulty. But they all have one thing in common: the surrounding mountains and the magnificent views from the Furkahorn to the Weisshorn. And every village is well served by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, so you can easily return to the starting point of your hike. The Rottenweg between Oberwald and Niederwald is particularly popular with winter hikers, as it always follows the young Rhone and is therefore flat and easy to walk on. The slope path on the sunny side of the valley is a little more challenging, but culturally very interesting, as it crosses the quaint Goms mountain villages between Oberwald and Biel.
Snowshoeing
Goms can definitely call itself a snow paradise. You can explore nature and the untouched winter landscape and enjoy the silence on eight signposted and safe snowshoe trails. Almost 40 kilometers are available to both sporty and pleasure-seeking snowshoe hikers: from leisurely trails in the valley to routes through the protective and snow-covered mountain forests and across sunny clearings. What is particularly recommended, however, is a guided snowshoe tour. The experienced guides know lots of interesting and exciting things about the country and its people, life in the high valley, fauna and flora and much more, making the hike a very special experience.
Skiing and snow park
The Goms ski areas with their wide and gently sloping pistes are ideal for families and less experienced skiers. In Oberwald, Münster-Geschinen and Gluringen, fun is the top priority. The ski instructors at the local ski schools are happy to give skiers a helping hand. The weekly night skiing in Münster-Geschinen is a special experience for young and old alike. A snow park in Gluringen impresses with its wide-ranging offer, which has something for everyone. In addition to the various obstacles with different levels of difficulty, there is also a BigAirBag for practising exciting maneuvers and tricks in the air.
Tobogganing
There are ten toboggan runs in Goms. The longest is 3.1 km long and leads from the source of the Rhone to Oberwald. There are other shorter and longer toboggan runs in or near practically every village in Goms. Night sledging is a very special experience. On the one hand - equipped with a headlamp - this is possible on the route between the source of the Rhone and Oberwald and on the other - by floodlight - at the ski lift in Geschinen.
About Goms: Goms lies in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The high valley around its original mountain villages is a paradise for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts and those seeking peace and quiet. With up to 300 days of sunshine a year, a stay in the great outdoors is a radiant pleasure. The nature is unique, the landscape characterized by the mountains. Goms is not only a paradise in winter. In summer, too, you can enjoy sport and well-deserved rest in Goms. In the restaurants, Goms' top chefs conjure up true works of art on the plate. Hospitality has always been a top priority in Goms. The king of hoteliers and hotelier of kings, Caesar Ritz, was born and grew up here.
