30 bikers enjoyed the opening ride on the Nufenen Trail and the Mossmatten Trail

As part of the 25th "Gommermärt", the opening of the completed bike trails in the Destination Goms took place on July 12, 2025 in perfect weather conditions.

Under the direction of the local bike club "Trailride Goms", 30 bikers set off on the opening ride via the Nufenen Trail and the Mossmatten Trail back to Reckingen. The recently completed "Furka Trail" is already enjoying national fame and has been well received by guests.

The trails are part of the cross-cantonal St. Gotthard Four or Five Passes Bike routes (Schweizmobil routes no. 84 and 85) in the Gotthard region or the cantonal Valais Panorama Bike route (no. 81). With the completion of the trails, Goms now boasts an impressive network of official bike trails covering 152 km. This was officially opened on the occasion of the Gommermärt with a guided ride.

In recent years, existing forest roads and hiking trails have been made suitable for biking and hiking or new sections of trail have been homologated and created, which can now be ridden. During the construction of the paths, care was taken to ensure that they were built according to the latest findings in path construction and thus withstand the high demands of weathering and wear and tear for as long as possible. Care was also taken to work with near-natural fixtures such as stones or wooden elements wherever possible and to avoid artificial structures.

The construction work and initial investments were carried out by the two municipalities of Obergoms and Goms in collaboration with Bikeplan, Forst Goms and Vast Trailbau as well as the cantonal authorities. Over CHF 1 million was invested in improving the product.

"With the completion of the bike trails in Goms, we now hope to bring added value to the region from a tourism perspective and to be able to offer guests a suitable offer for Goms," says Samuel Hofmann, Tourism Director in Goms. "Various establishments have already completed certification as bike hotels and are now addressing the target group directly," Hofmann continues. In addition, the aim is to extend the classic summer season with offers in the fall and encourage guests to discover the Aletsch-Goms bike region.

Coexistence is a central theme here. To this end, Goms has joined the cantonal "FairTrail" initiative. There is room for everyone in Goms. Nevertheless, there are certain rules that should be observed so that coexistence with hikers, cyclists and farmers is possible. The "Fairdinands", who are out and about on the trails to raise awareness of the issue, are already having an initial impact.

With the completion of the construction and signaling work, the operating and maintenance work is now being handed over to Obergoms Tourismus AG. The costs will be financed primarily from visitor taxes and donations from volunteers or voluntary work during maintenance work.
