Special Olympics Gommerlauf

The cross-country competitions for people with an impairment take place one week after the International Gommerlauf.

On Sunday, 6 March 2022, athletes from all over Switzerland will compete against each other over distances of 500 metres, one, three and six kilometres at the Nordic Centre in Ulrichen. In the morning, qualifying races will be held to determine the groups for the final races.

According to the Special Olympics regulations, no more than a maximum of eight athletes per strength class should be divided. This gives each participant the chance to win a medal.

In order to provide the athletes of Special Olympics with optimal conditions, three different double track classic cross-country skiing trails will be created for the different distances. The Nordic Centre in Ulrichen is the ideal location for the event in terms of running terrain and infrastructure.

The Obergoms Tourismus and the OC of the International Gommerlauf hope to attract as many cross-country skiers as possible from the many disabled sports groups throughout Switzerland to a cross-country skiing event in the beautiful Obergoms.

The Upper Valais Disabled Sports Group (BSOW) offers its athletes cross-country training on the Goms cross-country trail every Saturday. This involves a wide variety of training methods. Above all, however, the fun is in the foreground. Some members of the BSOW have international competition experience, having competed twice at the World Winter Games of Special Olympics, in Idaho (USA) in 2009 and in Schladming (A) in 2017.

During the competitions, the safety of the participants is paramount. The competitions are therefore held in strict compliance with all guidelines and are subject to the current protection concepts. The competitions are expected to be subject to the Covid certificate obligation. The certificate will be checked before the issue of starting numbers. Persons 16 years and older will only be admitted if they are vaccinated, recovered or tested negative.
